From salicylic acid to laser treatments, cryosurgery to surgery… Learn
about the wart removal options available and discover the pros and cons
of each method.

How are warts removed? The answer lies on what type of wart a
person has. If you happen have a wart and are not sure what type it is,
better visit a doctor and have it checked so he would be able to find
the right treatment for you. Warts can be difficult to determine
especially the ones at the bottom of the foot. Plantar warts happen to
look similar with corns and calluses since they form thick, hard skin,
so it is not easy to tell which the warts are and which are not.
Some warts do not need medical treatment and can heal on their own.
Other warts meanwhile are hard to remove because they are protected by
thick layers of skin. Warts can be treated, but sometimes they might
come back.
- There are available topical drugs which are used to treat warts,
and they can be bought at the drugstore. These treatments contain a
mild dose of salicylic acid that can remove dead skin cells that
surround the wart. You can wear a medicine patch that would cover
the affected spot, and in time the wart dries and crumbles away from
the skin.
- While salicylic acid is available over the counter, there are
also medicines which are only prescribed by the doctor. These
medicines are stronger, and you would have to apply it on your warts
every night for a series of weeks in order for them to be
eliminated.
- Laser treatment meanwhile is one of the options you can choose
when you want to remove stubborn warts. Laser treatments usually zap
plantar warts, as well as other hard to remove warts. It would take
a number of repeated sessions in order to finally get rid of plantar
warts.
- Cryosurgery is a kind of treatment in which the doctor uses
liquid nitrogen to freeze the wart, and once it is frozen, he can
remove it bit by bit. It also takes a few sessions until the wart is
finally removed, and another 1-3 months for the HPV to be fully
eliminated from the patient’s body.

- Do-it-Yourself wart removal have become popular with products
like compound W being available over the counter.
- Surgery can also be done to remove warts, but it is not really
recommended by experts because it leaves awful scars. However, it is
also as effective as cryosurgery and laser treatment in getting rid
of the warts.
